How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Venue in Northern Ireland
Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest and most exciting decisions you’ll make during your wedding planning journey. If you’re searching for the perfect wedding venue in Northern Ireland, you’ll quickly discover there are many beautiful options - from rustic barn venues and historic estates to coastal wedding venues overlooking the sea, particularly along the beautiful County Down coastline.
With so many choices available, it can be difficult to know where to start. To help you feel more confident, we’ve put together a list of key questions to ask when choosing your wedding venue. Trust your instincts, enjoy the process, and remember this is where your love story becomes a celebration.
Key Questions to Ask When Choosing Your Wedding Venue.
How much support does the venue offer on the lead up to and on the day?
For many couples, planning a wedding is completely new territory and it can feel overwhelming at times. Understanding how much support your venue provides both during the planning process and on the day itself is therefore essential. You shouldn’t have to worry about logistics, suppliers or timelines when you’re getting ready to walk down the aisle.
At Orange Tree House, we provide a dedicated on-site manager who will oversee your day and ensure everything runs smoothly from start to finish. Our senior wedding coordinator will also be your main point of contact throughout your planning journey, offering guidance and support whenever you need it. This allows you to relax and truly enjoy the day you’ve spent so long dreaming about.
Is the venue exclusive use/operating a one-wedding a day policy?
Exclusive use of a venue means you and your guests have the space entirely to yourselves - no other weddings guests or members of the public on site. This creates a more intimate, relaxed atmosphere and ensures your celebrations remain private. It’s also important for your photography, as you won’t have to worry about strangers appearing in your precious moments.
As an exclusive use wedding venue in Northern Ireland, you can relax knowing that the venue is yours and yours alone.
Can I have my ceremony onsite?
With the growing popularity of humanist and registrar-led ceremonies, many couples now prefer to hold both their ceremony and reception in one location. This not only makes the day more seamless but also allows you to spend more time with your guests without the need for additional travel.
If you’re planning a civil, religious or humanist ceremony, you can also check the official requirements via getting married in Northern Ireland guidance from NI Direct.
We are fully licensed to host both civil and religious ceremonies onsite, giving you the flexibility to plan your day exactly how you want it.

Our Stone Barn is the perfect setting for both your ceremony and reception. Originally a church, it retains a wonderful sense of history with its gothic windows and wooden beams, and it benefits from beautiful natural acoustics. We can seat up to 130 guests for your ceremony making it an elegant and atmospheric space to say “I do.”
Being able to hold both your ceremony and reception in one stunning location is one of the reasons so many couples fall in love with Orange Tree House.
Are there minimum number requirements?
Some venues require minimum guest numbers, so it’s always worth asking this early in your venue search to avoid disappointment.
At Orange Tree House, we believe that every couple and wedding is unique, which is why we welcome celebrations of any size! Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a larger celebration, our thoughtfully designed spaces ensure your wedding feels just right. Our maximum daytime capacity is 130 guests, increasing to 160 in the evening, but we’ve also hosted many beautiful smaller weddings.
What are the catering options?
Food plays such an important role in any wedding day, so it’s worth understanding how each venue approaches catering. Some venues work with preferred suppliers, others allow self-catering and some offer in-house catering.

At Orange Tree House, we are proud to have a talented in-house wedding catering team who will take care of your wedding meal, as well as canapés for your drinks reception and evening nibbles if you wish. Our food consistently receives glowing feedback from couples and their guests, and having our own team allows us to maintain high standards of both service and quality. We also give couples the flexibility to choose external suppliers for the afternoon or evening time should they wish.
Can I choose my own suppliers?
Every venue has its own policy when it comes to external suppliers. Some require you to use a set list, while others offer more freedom.
As a helpful starting point we include a recommended suppliers list as part of our brochure, but it is entirely optional. With more than 10 years of weddings under our belt, we’ve built wonderful relationships with some of Northern Ireland’s most talented wedding professionals and we love championing their services. We are so lucky to have so many amazing suppliers in this country, so you will be spoilt for choice!
What options are there for photos?
Having a mix of beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces is crucial for your wedding venue, not only for your guests’ enjoyment throughout the day, but especially for your wedding photos. You will treasure your wedding photos for years to come, and you want to ensure that there are multiple backdrops and spaces for your photographer to capture.
At Orange Tree House, our raised terrace overlooks the stunning Mourne Mountains and Strangford Lough, making it perfect for romantic couple portraits or fun group shots. The shoreline is just a short walk away, offering incredible photo opportunities depending on the tide. We are always happy to liaise with your photographer in advance to help plan around tidal times where possible, helping you maximise the chance of capturing beautiful shoreline wedding photos. Our bright and airy Orangerie also provides a beautiful indoor alternative in case of bad weather.
We are also conveniently located near several breathtaking offsite options for photos, including a secret 3-acre garden with ponds, the 12th century ruins of Greyabbey’s Monastery and the 19th century house and gardens of Mount Stewart.

Are there places to stay onsite or nearby?
Guest comfort and convenience are important considerations, particularly if you have friends and family travelling from afar.
While we don’t have any accommodation onsite, there are around 100 bed spaces within a five-mile radius, some of which are only a couple of minutes’ walk from the venue as well as larger hotels within a 15-25 minute drive. We can provide recommendations for local taxi and coach companies, and we’re approximately 40 minutes from Belfast City Airport and one hour from Belfast International Airport. Many guests comment on how much they enjoy the scenic coastal drive to reach us.
What is included as part of the venue hire?
Every venue differs in what it provides as standard, so understanding what you will need to source yourselves and what is already included is very important. Be sure to check whether prices include VAT and whether there are any additional charges.
At Orange Tree House, our venue hire includes exclusive use of the venue, all staff on the day, an on-site manager, use of our well-stocked bar, furniture, linens, crockery, cutlery, a cake table or swing, cake knife and PA system - essentially everything you need to bring your day together. We also have a few decorative extras available, such as our vintage post-box and decorative tree slices, should you wish to use them. All our prices are VAT inclusive.
Do you allow pets?
If you have always imagined your furry friend standing by your side as you say ‘I do’, it’s worth checking whether your venue is pet-friendly.
We love welcoming pets at Orange Tree House and understand how
important they can be to your celebrations. We can recommend some
brilliant pet chaperone services if needed and our secret room can be
used as a quiet retreat for your pet if they need a break from the
festivities.

What drink options are available?
Every venue has its own approach to alcohol, so it’s important to understand what options are available. Some venues include drinks in their packages, others operate a cash bar and some allow you to bring your own alcohol.
At Orange Tree House, we have a fully stocked bar for your guests throughout the day and offer a carefully curated selection of wines to accompany your meal. You can choose from our drinks packages or opt to pay by consumption if you prefer. If you have a particular wine in mind, we’re happy to try and source it for you and we also offer corkage. Should you wish for an alcohol-free celebration, there is no charge for closing the bar.

Is the venue accessible for guests with mobility needs?
Your and your guests’ comfort is key on the day, so if anyone in your wedding party has additional mobility needs it is important to make sure your venue can accommodate this.
Orange Tree House is fully accessible throughout the main areas, with the only exception being our wedding preparation room. We offer on-site parking for up to 11 cars and can reserve spaces for guests with Blue Badges. There is also a ramp to our raised terrace, ensuring easy access to our outdoor spaces.
